Winter tides pile shells and reeds along the beaches of the Golden Isles. This makes for great shell hunting when most beaches are deserted. It was on a trip to Cumberland Island in early February I discovered a store of shells, bright with pinks, blushes, and peachy creams laced with reeds and grasses washed high on the beach. The tangled menagerie was such a sight to behold, I felt no need to disturb it by collecting anything. Instead, I sketched and made reference photos, jotted notes about the vista, the weather, the low light...all the information I would need to inform a painting. All of that is here in Winter's Bounty.
